The History of the Holy Roman Empire
In 1512, at the Imperial Diet of Cologne, the name Holy Roman Empire was made official. From 911 onward, the Emperor was chosen by electors, the heads of noble families. The Golden Bull of 1356 set a number of rules into place to regulate the process. Power became increasingly decentralized with these various kingdoms, principalities, cities and territories ruling themselves.
