The Roman System and the Greek System
The right to bear the Gentile name is one of many Roman vestiges. The sacro-gentilia are well known for obligation not to marry within the gens. In many ways it's quite identical to the Iroquois system and even to the Greek system that we've looked at so far. It was ultimately doomed due to the expansion of Roman territory which created a population outside Rome.
