In the 19 sixties, a global programme was launched to vaccinate populations against smallpox. It cost hundreds of millions of dollars and was largely paid for by america and the soviet union. By 19 80, the disease was declared eradicated and the funding abruptly stopped. With it, the mass vaccintions, smallpox was driven away from our globe.
