John wesley gilbert i was a student at brown university from 18 86 to 18 88. He formed a close tie with his greek professor, a professor named albert harkness. In the 18 eighties, you know, greece was a long, long way away from the united states. Nobody went there for tourism. And that's what gilbert did in 18 90 to 18 91. That made him the first african American student of the american school.
