Humans use crying as a very visual manifestation to show distress or in some cases happiness. We recognize each other by having a specific brain area devoted just to recognizing faces. Our brains are programmed to look very hard at faces if you show people pictures and you put eye tracking software on so that you can see what things people spend more time looking at. And this is because that's how we tell each other apart.
