What Is the Object of Imitation?

Aristotle says the object of imitation is men, in human beings, doing the kinds of things they do. Poetry utters universal truths history particular statements. The poets make up the story on the basis of probability and then attach names to the characters at random. They do not write about particular individuals, as the lampoonists used to do. In the case of tragedy, they retain the traditional names.
