For me, Linux was the most open platform for learning in the world. Open source has this fractal nature that is unstoppable because you can take anything and layer in more additions and improvements or use it as an implementation detail. The idea of like your starting point is not a blank slate. You can pick it back off of many other things. And now Val has this quote that I really like that is open source means that every problem only has to be solved once.
