Between 1858 and 1879, any American who read a newspaper was likely to encounter Van Everie's work. He published first a textbook, Youth History of the Great Civil War in the United States. And then the next year, a book called White Supremacy and Negro Support Nation. So you have Northerners influencing and telling the South, essentially, how to view the evilness of Abraham Lincoln.
