The Taliban did not allow women to go outside alone. So Shabbana's parents dressed her up as a boy so she could accompany her sister to school. When the Taliban fell after the US invasion in 2001, Shabbana went to a real school for the first time. She excelled and won a place in a State Department program to spend a year of high school in the US.
