The Indians and the Skirmish Line

General Koster saw the Indian dodge, which was to use these men as a decoy to draw them into the woods. Lieutenant Koster had anticipated the order and was already dismounting his men. The Indians opened a heavy fire, which was quickly answered by our men with their sharp car beans. From their advantage of numbers, they were able to extend the skirmish line clear around from river to river so as to enclose the cavalry in a semi-circle.
