The Hermeneutic of Charity
I encourage my students not to vilify culture, but to use a hermeneutics of charity. The idea that I want to get across in the book is that theology is imminently practical because doctrine gives direction for discipleship. It helps hearers become doers. And it's just not enough to hear either scripture or doctrine. We've got to do Jesus' words, and we have to somehow practice the doctrine we teach. So we have to live out the knowledge if we want to be wise.
