There are sound, economic or sociological arguments for and against what David Graber says. In his favor, it's always struck me that in the evolution from an agrarian to an industrial to a knowledge economy, we started to run out of things to manufacture. This accounts for much of the growth in management consultancy. Similarly, you can argue against Graber that it is socially vital to have people occupied for several hours a day instead of laying idle. And if people are being paid for something, there may be demand for it and satisfying that demand is useful.
