They made papier mache heads of themselves. They stole over 50 raincoats and they made them into makeshift life jackets. The FBI officially closed the case on December 31st, 1979 about this escape. But they have turned the responsibility over to the US Marshall service who continue to investigate. There was a team of Dutch scientists who did some computer simulations about whether the rafts would have made it to the mainland.
