It is an incredibly repressive time to be a woman. Women have zero rights, and if they do rebel, they end up experiencing social exile or tremendous poverty, etc. The women in the novel are pushed to the sidelines or killed while the man at the center, Victor Frankenstein, plays God by creating life on his own. The result is a creature whose motherless, like Mary was. This is actually a book about women.
