The bacteria that they used, Roto-Coxis-Ruber, or Reuber, broke down about 1% of the plastic available to it per year. Another study also found that in places where there's a lot of plastic in the environment, bacteria are essentially evolving to eat the plastic. Not every enzyme breaks down every kind of plastic. You have to match the right enzyme with the right type.
