Slavery and the University of South Carolina

The chairs of many colleges and universities like Yale, Rutgers, Columbia University were actually established by proceeds from slave-slaiving voyages. The Bowdoin Prize is a really prestigious fellowship given at Harvard as well as Maine's Bowdoin College - named after Governor James Bowdoin who purchased enslaved people. In fact, during the mid-17th century, Thomas Hubbard, who is the treasurer of Harvard, was involved in the slave trade.
