In august, harold hardrada gathered together a large fleet of about 300 ships. They crossed over to the shetlands and then the orkney islands. Landed for a time in scotland, reconnoitred with tostig and his supporters. In september, they began landing and attacking in small groups along the river humber. On september twentieth, they defeated the earls of northumbria and mercia,. which allowed them to capture the city of york. And so it's now under the control of this norwegian invasionary force.
