What Does Voltaire Represent for Auden?

Auden was working on Voltaire in the late 30s and he wrote a poem called Voltairex Fernay. It was contemporaneous with a review that he wrote of two biographies that came out at about that time. He described Voltaire as unexpectedly a great proponent of social democracy. In the poem, that Voltaire appears, but more significantly Voltaire appears as a poet divided against himself.
