Beer uses algedonics to just mean alert. There's nothing special to his formulation, just the name. When something bad happens on a lower level, it raises an algedonic alert. I don't know why he has to use a special greek derived name for this. Nowhere in bear's description of v s m do we find explicit reference to computers. This is a generalized and conceptual model. In theory, you could apply v s m to anything. But in practice, the system only made sense when using a computer or some other automated system.
