There's an interesting connection here between equality on the philosophical side and inequality on the economic side. If you take as a given that we should be equal in this sense, that none of us should rule over the others, then if you leave people alone, some of us are going to rise higher than others. And unbeknownst to aunt, he's making James Madison's argument from Federalist 10. This is exactly what Madison says there. But whether we can ever actually do that to a degree that would make it sensible, I don't know. That seems like a really tall order."
