The system is based on the idea that our cells are constantly under attack by parasitic DNA elements. Once these elements are silenced, they're particularly good at propagating the silencing as a cell grows and divides. So what we're really doing is kickstarting the system over to the silent state. once you're in the silent state, the cell's very good at keeping it there.
