In On the Trinity, Augustine proposes that the mind never ceases to know, remember, and love itself. Our mental life does not consist only of fleeting thoughts and images, but an enduring self-awareness. We can say that you are remembering yourself right now, even if it is more usual to use the word memory when we are grasping images of things in the past. Obviously, permanent self-awareness offers a better image of the eternal divine trinity than the other human trinities we have considered.
