The Knights of Labor and those allied with them fought tooth and nail to expel the Chinese from Tacoma in 1885. Grover Cleveland had to send federal troops to keep things under control, which infuriated Cronin's allies. The anti-Chinese sentiment was wafting all over the Pacific Northwest among not only men, but women as well. People were able to win control of the local government with their people's party. They didn't hold on to power for long, but long enough to indelibly ink their names to the Seattle riots of 1886.
