Neanderthals and the Genetic Basis of Language

The fact that Neanderthals survived for well over 300,000 years means they were probably very well adapted to their environment and lifestyle. And just because they didn't do some of the things that we modern humans have later done, it doesn't mean that they were less evolved. There is a gene called Foxby2 which was initially posited to be sort of a uniquely, or to have variants that are uniquely present in modern humans. That might underlie the genetic basis, at least of language development.
