Luther was originally from France, and many French Protestants were his followers. Lutherans of Magdeburg in Saxony stated that the lower magistricy is required by God's divine command to attempt to stand up to such superiors as far as possible. The application of history to present concerns was typical of humanism - Bruni or Machiavelli among others.
