Can the President Override a Bill?

The president generally knows when the override is likely to happen based on the consensus around the original passage of the bill. A veto can be used to some extent to score political points. But don't forget, while the president does have this power to keep bills from becoming law, the veto cannot be used to keep members of congress from debating the bill in the first place. We'll get into veto overrides and more depth later on.
