In first contact, it works for me because yes, it's kind of sensationalized. But also it is very overtly a story about him overcoming racial hatred. He deeply despises the board on an extremely intimate level. And it's a storyabout him coming to terms with that. I mean, well, I happen to really love Moby Dick like genuinely, not ironically. It's one of my favorite classics.
