I was delighted when this little cottage industry of bertology suddenly sprouted out of nowhere so here's the thing it struck me that deep learning used to be very much like a branch of mathematics right because it was part of statistics. Here we are today with models that are so complicated they're more like biology artifacts and trying to understand things like how the heck does bert do it understand grammar? We just don't have the correct mathematical tools I think to really understand what it's learning but there are some efforts out from like Chris Ola and trying to understanding better what transformers are really learning.
