Charles Marlowe's Nelly
The novel opens on a ship called the Nelly on the mouth of the Thames River outside of London. A man named Charles Marlowe speculates what it would have been like when England was a dark place in the world, quote. The conquest of the earth "is not a pretty thing when you look into it too much," he writes. He says Romans grabbed what they could get for the sake of what was good to be got.
