The doorpost in Exodus 21 symbolizes the mercy that God displayed for the Israelites, they forged with the Almighty as a result. In seeing that blood upon the doorpost his own blood, we wish to remind both him and all the rest of society that there's only one being who's worthy of human devotion. No short term political victory is worth surrendering our principles.
