The Origins of Writing in Ancient Egypt
Papyrus was the preferred material for writing in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians also used animal hides, which would constitute the earliest known forms of parchment. Another form of writing that may have emerged in Greek lands during the 1st millennium BCE was the use of wax tablets. A codex is one of the first types of proper book, and they were produced by the Romans. They would collate pieces of parchment or papyrus to form these codices.
