The Battle of Constantinople
In 1856 the Ottoman Empire went to war with Russia over control of the Black Sea. Russian officials had been quietly trying to sound out the British government for their position. The phrase "sick man of Europe" became popular and has remained so too the present. But this also was not really true or like so many myths it is only partly true. In reality the Ottoman state was gradually mounting crisis from the late 1600s onwards until it finally collapsed in the 20th century.
