There's a really interesting pattern whethe in these fish and in other ocean fish, the big fish are super producers. The female rock fish, some of the ones we studied at their oldest age, they can produce up to a million eggs a year. So that's something that you would imagine a species selecting for because it's going to increase your ability to reproduce yourself. But also, i think it has to do with the amount of space the fish takes up in its environment. You could have ten relatively small fish in the same space as one really big fish in the environment.
