66: Peter Turchin - Why Empires Rise & Fall

The Nietzsche Podcast

CHAPTER

The History of Empires

The entire secular cycle of an empire lasts about 250 years. With a short cycle wrapping up in a quick two centuries, maybe a decade or so less and longer iterations lasting perhaps up to 300 years at the very long end. The example of Rome is particularly instructive in understanding this pattern because it shows how there are cycles within cycles as Turchin puts it. We can even see this pattern where a given empire isn't exactly overthrown or doesn't descend entirely into anarchy but simply ceases to occupy the position of power it once had.
