CHAPTER

Samuel Langley

Samuel pierpont langley was paid by the government to develop heavier than air flight. He made some large, unpiloted steam and gasolene powered models which flew successfully in 18 96. But he then tried to build a full sized, human carrying, piloted craft. And that was a flawed thinking from an engineering point of view. The large, full scale aircraft collapsed upon itself, crashed miserably, and ended his experiments with flight. In those days, the head of the smithsonian was sort of the chief scientist of the united states.
