After a discussion of the tripartate nature of consciousness and psychoanalytic theory with a special emphasis on the ego professor Campbell speaks to the possibility that the genesis of mythic images and archetypes might be biological as well as psychic. He suggests that some symbols particularly the enduring seemingly universal symbols of mythology function as a fixed action pattern and triggers a predictable series of actions F A P's are much more complex than simple reflexes although they are still autonomous and involuntary once the F A P is stimulated it will carry through to completion even if the stimulus is removed.
