The b m i associated with the lowest mortality has been increasing over calendar time. Obesity doesn't, from an association point of view, look quite as bad in the 19 nineties as it did in the 19 seventies. And maybe it's stigma. Maybe it's those three stuges that you think about when you're old and there was a guy who was often mocked for being curly - right? By today's standards, he's not that big at all. So what goes back to my question: What is the real effect of fat on death? This may be that b m  is partially accounting for it; we don't know.
