In Our Time: Religion
The Importance of Penitence
In Western tradition, the idea that somebody who had been a sexual sinner could get pretty well as close to Jesus as someone who was virginal is powerful. Gregory wanted to introduce very keen on introducing the idea of penitence, a penitential sinner. When he unites her with Luke's unnamed sinner in chapter 7 there, what he's saying is that someone who fell so low was also someone who loved the most. She went into the house of the Pharisee and debased herself. And we see this in the visual arts as we'll come later on in the 1314th, 15th centuries where we see her crawling on her hands and knees.
