The Jacobin by Toby Manning - John Le Correic
There's a piece in the Jacobin by Toby Manning that I found from 2020 called John Le Correic captured the paranoid mood of the Cold War. His depiction of communism is like basically people going to church, even though they don't want to go to church. He really grew to dislike and be disillusioned by the, the intelligence apparatus and saw it as just like, you know, people exercising power for power's sake.
