It is argued that there was really no need to look to so precarious a source of light. The principles on which these great men acted, even though thy may not have known it, could be extracted and reduced to a proper, accurate science. This thesis would be more plausible if the newly discovered laws didn't turn out to be either ancient truisms or just plain wrong.
