Locke's Political Questioning of Liberalism
The political teaching that we call liberalism emerged in the wake of the Reformation. It was, among other things, an attempt to provide a new political doctrine That might help to limit the incidents of religious war and thereby create a more peaceful world. Locke is particularly clear and was particularly successful; he conveys the spirit of the teaching better than any alternative. But there are many defenders of liberalism enormously important for the American founding and almost the important for the French Revolution.
