Is Mechanistic Interpretability Really Necessary?
The most practical path to meaningfully understanding really complicated systems is via using less dangerous AIs. I do not think this is even necessary before we could reverse engineer a human-level system, at least enough to figure out whether it's safe. But mechanterp is one of the more promising things that isn't susceptible to that criticism.
