Buchanan was educated at the Villages Academy and Dickinson College. In 1812 he was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar after an oral exam. By 1821, he was earning the equivalent of 210,000 US a year in today's dollars as a lawyer. He handled various kinds of cases, including high-profile impeachment trials.
