We don't see self replicating probes from other parts of the universe. But at some point we should be able to create a kind of intelligence that somewhat resembles humans, or might even be better than humans. That would have a much better shot at spreading o spreading to the stars. It's like, much more resilient. And then it arrives there and starts creating more copies of itself. The fact that we don't, in an os way see them, strengthens the case for pessimism.
