The state of Indiana had been a hotbed of the KKK during the First World War generation before. Unlike many other northern cities, India already had a significant black population going back to before the Great Migration. By the early 1950s, there were an estimated 40 to 50,000 African Americans living within Indianapolis city limits. The means of keeping blacks in their places was typically less overt than the hostility found in either the deep south or the more violent northern cities like Chicago or Detroit.
