What's the Story of the Book?

The book covers a period from approximately 1930 to the present, and it sort of tracks like how the dancer came to symbolically represent India. In the very first chapter, there's a scene that is actually from my dissertation field work where I was doing research on a dance style called Gujiburi. "I'm sure if you asked me this question a month ago, or if you ask it a month from now, my answer might be different," she says.
