In ancient tradition, the Christians could not be held in bondage. British judges ruled that conversion to Christianity would have no effect on a slave's claim to freedom. The mid-18th century saw a rise in the number of people willing to educate, Christianize, moralize, and civilize slaves in the colonies. Slaveholders blamed slave revolts on missionaries who put the idea of liberty into the minds of slaves.
