You've spent a lot of your scholarly work on trying to understand what scripture is. Is that a similar process to thinking about history, or is scripture a slightly different category in terms of interpreting how the past and present and the transcendent interact? I think revelation is one of those categories of experience in which this relationship between the transit and the permanent is on display. A language is historically formed. The word enthusiasm was uniformly pajorative in the eighteenth century. Its fanaticism, its irrationality. By the late nineteenth century, early twentieth century, enthusiasm is something that you're looking for in a job candidate. And i think it's one of those places where this dynamic is on display,
