Fari came from a middle class family, but he did experience the loss of that stability early in his life. He was schooled in Brazil and then went to university where he studied philosophy. At some point, before 1968, he was employed by the government to work on adult literacy. And that experience is what eventually gave rise to his first major work: The pedagogy of the oppressed.
