Does the Brain React the Same Way to Hallucinations?

This inner speech model makes sense to me when i think about the experience of who describe a running commentary or a single voice that's pretty much constantly speaking to them. But it wouldn't necessarily make sense of the experience of hallucinations, where people hear multiple voices or short, discontinuous elements of speech. Both models are really supported by different lines of research. And it may well be that when we think about something like hallucination, there isn't one explanation. I don't think we fully understand how this works but i suspect what happens is, this experience is being generated internally. The brain has to make some coherent sense of that.
